Welcome to our website showcasing historical sites in Coosa County. Established by the Alabama State Legislature on December 18, 1832, Coosa County was one of 14 counties organized from lands ceded by the Creek Indians in the 1832 Treaty of Cussetta. The Coosa County Historical Society works to maintain the numerous historical sites around the county and keep them available to the public.

Donate / Memberships

The Coosa County Historical Society does not receive any funding and depends on your generosity to provide upkeep and maintenance to the many historical sites in Coosa County.

Old Rock Jail

Old Rock Jail

Built in 1842, the old Coosa County Jail, known as the Old Rock Jail, is the oldest surviving stone jail in Alabama. Today it is a museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Museum, located in Rockford is operated by the Coosa County Historical Society and is open April through June, and September through October, on most Sundays from 2 – 4 pm. Admission is $3 per person with children under 12 admitted free. The exterior is publicly accessible year round.

Sears Chapel

Sears Chapel Methodist Church

Sears Chapel Methodist Church is one of the most photographed small churches in rural Alabama. It is located on Hwy 231 in Rockford, Alabama and was founded around 1860 by Mr. John Sears, a prominent millwright, with the current structure built around 1895. Services are held every fifth Sunday with “Homecoming” held the first Sunday in August.
